Summer of SLUNT
SLUNT is one of the three bands1 we've been listening to pretty much non-stop this summer (2005). They're like a cross between- ha! Kidding. That's the gayest way to describe a band ever. They're just a great rock band. Most of the big new bands in rock these days are whiny shit-bags with bad 70s hair cuts who go on like "oh, I'm so deep" and "no one's ever gone through this before me". Shut it! No you're not, yes they have, and I don't care. I want to hear about fast cars, hot women, booze and rock. Red vinyl pants and heavy metal karaoke. SLUNT delivers. They'll show up with more than enough sex and rock 'n' roll - all you have to worry about is the drugs. Atlanta was lucky enough to get two SLUNT shows in two weeks and Christine and I are were lucky enough to be living here at the time. What we didn't expect was that we'd get to hog up a lot of their time while they were here. To see one of your favorite bands in a small venue is kick ass. To party with them after the show and be the ambassadors of your town? That just doesn't happen. Well, OK, it probably happens to hot chicks all the time… wait a second. Maybe I should be thanking Christine.
The first show was at Smith's Olde Bar, which was followed by the obligatory trip for out-of-towners to the Clermont Lounge2. To be honest, I don't remember a whole lot of what went on that night, but I still had all my parts when I woke up, so we'll call it a success. If you look at the Tour Journal for August 2005 on SLUNT's web site3, you'll notice a reference to some great fans in Hotlanta. (Click the image for the full screenshot.) This post confirms something I already knew: Christine and I are awesome hosts. I would bust Pat's balls for spelling Clermont wrong, but I had to check the Yellow Pages the other day to get the right spelling (and it took me 4 tries 'cause C L E R? WTF?).
Since something like three people are going to see this page, I don't think I'll be stealing Abby's thunder if I explain the "farting stripper" reference. As we were watching the dancers come and go, we noticed that the one that just got on stage was actually pretty decent looking. I was marveling at this rarity when someone said "check out her pits". Holy crap. Her armpits were every bit as hairy as mine. I didn't know what to think at that point. My hotness gauge had never been fed that kind of, um… data. But enough about my confusion. You need to know that the girls' bathroom at the Clermont doubles as the dressing room for the "talent". Christine, Abby, and our friend Jocelyn had gone into the bathroom and were taking pictures of their own boobs with Abby's cell phone. When they were done goofing around, Abby hung back to actually use the bathroom for it's intended purpose. While she was in there, "Hot But Hairy" shows up and says something like "My boyfriend told me I shouldn't have had so many tacos", followed by a fart that lasted for like 15 seconds.
Nice.
After that, the band headed south to Florida and had all kinds of fun meeting people, getting loaded and dodging hurricanes. Not that it was boring here. I, uh, rewrote some code and made one of Georgia Tech's major web sites operate three times faster. And Christine went to class and learned the shit out of some stuff! Rock 'n' roll!!!
The next week, it was a show at the Alley Cat. It's a cool bar, but we normally boycott because the city government sucks. They made all the bars close at 3AM except the ones in Underground Atlanta (in other words, the ones paying rent to the city). Anyway, we weren't missing the show for anything (not even our early morning flight the next day). SLUNT rocked again. I felt a little bad standing up front because the stage was so low that I think I was taller than Abby, but I figure everyone should have been up front standing next to me, so it's their problem if they couldn't see. I've got pictures from both shows in my photo gallery (Smith's Olde Bar, Alley Cat). There are also some on the band's site in their Fan Pix gallery (one of the galleries is represented by some familiar superboobs)3.
1 If you really want to know, Seemless and The White Stripes.
2 The Clermont is in the Wikipedia? Holy shit. That's awesome.
3 Yeah, I know. The web site is all done in Flash, which blows, and on top of that, it will try to resize your browser window. I'm sorry. It's out of my hands. Seems like pretty much every band does it though, so don't hold it against them. And their picture gallery will resize your browser window too, which I also apologize for, but at least I made it open in its own window so it wouldn't fuck with your main one.
